It’s been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2017’s Metroidvania masterpiece, Hollow Knight. Over the years, fans have seen Silksong appear or not appear at various shows, and at one point Microsoft even seemed to confirm that the game would be released before June 2023. The Game Awards passed without Hollow Knight: Silksong. But could the just-announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the one?
Fans think so, all because of the photo of the cake. Let me explain.
Supersleuths on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a photo of a chocolate cake. Pellen wrote on Twitter: “Something big is coming. Tomorrow, keep your eyes closed.”
something substantial is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow

At the time, there were rumors that the Nintendo Switch 2 would debut on January 16, and this has been confirmed. This was the day Nintendo finally announced the Switch 2, although we still have many burning questions about the next-gen console. Did Pellen really ask followers to keep an eye out for the Switch 2 announcement? If so, why?
This is where the Hollow Knight community went to the next level – or went off the deep end, depending on your point of view. Fans searched for a photo of the cake, which led them to the Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on the cooking site Enjoy your food. Recipe publication date: April 2, 2024.
Why would this date be crucial here? As Nintendo has confirmed that Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 will air on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. That’s right, fans believe Pellen started the Alternate Reality Game (ARG) Silksong with this tweet and cake photo.
Fans didn’t stop there. They are currently trying to determine what, if anything, Pellen’s novel X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, means. Redditor-True has the best theory I’ve seen so far: “The character limit for Twitter handles is 15 characters, which is the length of “everydruidwaswr.” I think “wr” is probably the beginning of a word, like bad or something. I still have to decipher this, but the Moss Temple Druid is a Silk Song NPC.
The plot thickens! Pellen has a novel X/Twitter name to match her novel nickname and profile picture: Little Bomey. What is it about? Fans have noticed that Little Boomey is a wine from South Australia, where Team Cherry comes from, but the spelling is different. What could this mean?!
It’s worth remembering that when Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced, Team Cherry confirmed launch platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago. Has Nintendo chosen Hollow Knight: Silksong as a launch title for Switch 2? Is this a transient exclusivity? Is this all just crazy behavior from information-hungry fans?
We have a few months to find out. In the meantime, check out everything announced during the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation.
