The classic PS4 Racer DriveClub is already a decade elderly

DriveClub, the legendary PS4 racing game from the closed Runcorn Evolution studio, has an extremely fascinating history. The game, originally announced with the PS4, was intended to be a launch title – we even played it in a vast London church that Sony rented to showcase the fresh system before its launch. But then it was delayed multiple times until October 7, 2014.

The initial wave of reviews was not unusual. Here we gave it a rating of 7/10 Press squarelabeling it “archaic” – a sentiment widely shared at the time due to the title’s more time-honored progression system. When all was said and done, its Metacritic score was around 71, which was a disappointment from the creator of the critically acclaimed MotorStorm games.

Over time, DriveClub has grown into something truly special. The excellent post-release support saw the addition of various tracks, events, and vehicles. A year later, it received a huge expansion to allow for motorcycle riding – and was eventually even moved there PSVRalthough this version had to be purchased separately.

The game is controversial PS Plus versionwhich acted a bit like a demo, introduced the title to a fresh audience, and the addition of weather effects remains some of the most impressive on any console to this day. From disastrous delays to middling reviews to a long-lasting legacy, DriveClub is fondly remembered today.
