Devolver Digital and developer All Possible Futures have At last announced the release date for The Plucky Squire. The adorable adventure is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 17th. Oh, and it’ll be available on day one via PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium.
The brave Squire tells the story of Joy and his friends who must save the land from the evil Humgrump in a gripping action-adventure. However, with death imminent, Humgrump casts one last magical spell that tears the fabric of the book world apart and throws Jot into the 3D world around him.
Now Jot will have to travel between multiple worlds, fighting in a 3D world and jumping into 2D spaces that could be the pages of a book, the side of a coffee mug, and more. Along the way, he’ll gain modern abilities, like grabbing a jetpack and fighting all sorts of foes, like getting into a boxing match with a badger or using his newly discovered bow and arrow to take down a ranged foe.
If you’ve been following Devolver Digital for the past few years, you might recognize The Swords of Ditto’s art style in its 2D segments, and there’s a very good reason for that. This game comes from Bidds, who is no longer known for One Bit Beyond, but is a part of All Possible Futures alongside former Pokémon designer James Turner.
We got a chance to play the game at Gamescom last year, and Dom said, “The Plucky Squire takes a few lines from The Legend of Zelda, a paragraph or two from Mario, and borrows a few footnotes from Pixar, but it’s clear that All Possible Futures is writing its own story. Based on Gamescom 2023, it’s headed straight to the top of the bestseller list.”
