The actor behind Fallout YouTube’s legendary power armor-wearing storyteller, The Storyteller, has apparently died, prompting the Bethesda community to pay tribute

Jason Damron, the voice actor for The Storyteller — the main character of the popular fan-made Fallout series on YouTube — has apparently died.

This follows a tweet posted earlier today on Damron’s account, which uses his online name Kankennon and is the same listed in the descriptions of the latest Storyteller films featuring him.

“Hi everyone, I’m Emily Damron, daughter of Jason Damron (Storyteller),” we read. “I just wanted to share that on Saturday, September 7th, my father passed away after a terrible year of illness. He was diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal cancer that had spread to his liver.”

For those who are not familiar, Storyteller Series is a game that has enjoyed a similar level of fandom to other Fallout fan creations like Nuka Break. With millions of views on YouTube and covering lore from the original Fallouts to Bethesda’s newfangled offerings – Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 – as well as New Vegas, The Storyteller’s premise was straightforward but wonderful.

You’ll play as an armored wasteland hero obsessed with cataloging the past and present of the world around him, brought to life machinima-style using fashionand uses its journeys through the wastelands depicted in the games to cover areas of Fallout lore, while the adventure’s plot, which gradually unravels as the series progresses, prevents things from becoming too droughty or information-laden. For younger fans like me who got into Fallout through the newer installments, the series was a great way to first get a taste of the wider Fallout world and the events of Fallout 1 and 2.

Damron’s voice, performing alongside a cast that occasionally included the likes of longtime Bethesda voice actor Wes Johnson, Courtenay Taylor — the voice of the female Sole Survivor from Fallout 4 — and even a cameo from Fallout creators Tim Cain and Josh Sawyer in one episode, was a massive part of the appeal. It was the kind of voice that turned what could easily seem like awkward lectures on history into monologues that kept the viewer engaged and drawn into the journey.

The news of the actor’s apparent passing was met with tributes from a number of personalities and creators within the Fallout/Bethesda community. “Jason was always a pleasure to work with, and he had an incredible passion for both Fallout and creating cool content. The world is darker without him. It’s devastating,” he wrote Austin Houriganthe current main personality of the Shoddycast channel on YouTube, where Storyteller Series starring Damron, the series aired from 2013 to 2017.

“Thank you for working together and for the pleasant conversations. A true legend in the Fallout community with his character, Storyteller! My thoughts are with his family,” he wrote YouTuber TKs-Mantis“This is absolutely heartbreaking,” added another Fallout YouTuber, Juicer“The Storyteller was a huge inspiration to me and my content, and it was a big part of the reason I started making Fallout videos.”
