Alice Bee (RPS in peace) wrote about the platformer System Purge a while back, saying that it features a witch with a nice jump. So I tried out the demo of its sequel, System Purge: Hollow Point, and I can confirm that the witch still has a nice jump. I’m grateful for this, because if the witch didn’t have a frigid jump, the game would be annoying in a bad way. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still annoying. Just in a good way. Hops are good.
System Purge: Hollow Point is a tricky platformer in which you play as a witch who looks a bit like a two-legged My Little Pony. Early in the story, your lover appears to explode into a terrifying mass of tentacles – as often happens. You, a pony witch, appear at a mysterious facility and decide to find out why this happened. You do this by jumping through its filthy, metallic innards and avoiding the many, many traps it brings.
We’re talking about floors that flash red and then swing upwards like jaws. Or floating red balls hanging from the ceiling and exploding on contact. A gust of green wind could then blow away these orbs, turning them into the equivalent of swinging chandeliers with lightweight bulbs as mines. There are also underwater sections where you have to swim and, if possible, look for air bubbles. Die from any of these things and you’ll start the level over from scratch.
This is a terrible time. But in the good sense of the word, if you like hard platformers where precision counts. Yes, there are times when the emphasis on trial and error is a bit frustrating. And yet, I found the demo levels to be a nice progression from diminutive jumps to larger, riskier jumps.
