Having trouble logging into Steam to play any of the modern Tuesday games? It’s not just about you, and it’s not just weekly maintenance either.
Steam is currently suffering from massive outages, as evidenced by users reporting issues on DownDetector and reports on various social media. And according to CyberNewsthis appears to be due to a massive DDoS attack targeting several services including Steam, AWS, Riot Games, and even OpenAI.
Steam usually shuts down or has problems around 5:00 PM ET on Tuesdays, when Valve performs its weekly maintenance. However, this type of widespread outages definitely appears to be related to DDoS attacks, as it appears to be a targeted attack on ISPs and is affecting many people around the world.
The outages began on October 6 around 7 p.m. Polish time, with another wave occurring in the early morning hours. But this latest one, which appeared around 11:30 a.m. ET, appears to be bigger and more sedate than the others, with many users unable to log into Steam at all.
When I try to log in, it says “Who’s playing?” screen on Steam and after entering my credentials I cannot connect to the game at all. If the DDoS attack continues to hit providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Cloudflare, problems may persist for some time.
Either way, gamers looking to play modern titles or favorite classics are unable to at this point while Steam struggles with the onslaught. For now, players will have to touch the grass for a while and hope that the problem will go away soon.
This is a developing story that we’re following in real time, so stay tuned for updates. Destructoid has reached out to Valve for comment on the crash.
Updated on October 7 at 12:40 p.m. Polish time: For many people, Steam issues appear to be subsiding as users can log back into the service, but for now results may vary.
