Do I sometimes check the website? steamdeck.com/pl/oled longingly wishing my starter Steam Deck had better battery life, a luxurious screen, and quieter cooling? Would it be embarrassing to admit that? Maybe I should say instead that I’ve held off on spending money on a second Deck while I know my LCD model is still in great shape, because while these OLED upgrades are tempting, they’re not critical enough to make me spend $550. I could be in trouble if Valve discounts OLED the way it’s currently discounting the 512GB LCD Steam Deck.
To celebrate Steam’s birthday, Valve is currently we offer 25% discount on the top model of Steam Deck with 512 GB LCD display (anti-reflective etched glass version), which brought the price down from $449 to $336.75. I have to admit, that’s a pretty good price for what was, until OLED, the premium version of the Deck, and it’s still a great portable gaming console.
The base 64GB LCD Steam Deck model is only 15% off, but that still brings its price down to just under $300 — but that’s only a better buy if you’re willing to crack it open and add your own 1TB+ SSD. The store page notes that this is a “buy it while it’s hot” situation: “The 64GB and 512GB Steam Deck LCD models are being discontinued,” meaning once they sell out of existing stock, bye-bye.
After the sale, only the 256GB LCD model will remain as the last of the Steam Deck line. It sells for $400, which is $150 less than the cheapest OLED. I’m personally waiting to see what AMD and Valve come up with for these next-gen APUs, which are set to launch in early 2025…
