October 31st Starship Troopers: Continuum will be released on PS VR2. This cooperative multiplayer shooter is the first to recreate Starship Troopers in virtual reality. In this blog, we will explain what the name of the game actually means. But first, welcome a special guest! The face of FedNet, the hero of Klendath, General Johnny Rico!
A word from Casper Van Dien
“I think Starship Troopers are the closest thing to a hero. My hero, Johnny Rico, has been with me for almost 30 years. He spends most of the first film surrounded by death. He’s responsible for a death in training. By mistake there is a KIA on Klendathu. He advances as soldiers die around him, falling through the ranks.
“The citizen assumes personal responsibility for the security of the political body, defending it with his life; civilian no.
Eventually, Rico changed. He takes this quote to heart and is willing – even very willing – to die for the cause. He becomes tougher, stronger, more pragmatic… but at what cost?
In Starship Troopers: Continuum, Rico is a figurehead for FedNet’s “Klendathu 25” celebration. I lend a hand recruit fresh meat for the grinder, and you are the meat. You play as mobile infantry soldiers who fight against hostile arachnid forces. Thousands will die on both sides. You are disposable. Mobile infantry is dying and that’s what this game is all about.
VR puts you right there, on the battlefield with your team, facing huge, quick, mean and deadly bugs. Like Rico, you are surrounded by death. So look ahead, Soldier! It is your duty to take responsibility and defend the Federation with your life! Or do you want to live forever?”
Authenticity has evolved
When creating Starship Troopers: Continuum, we at XR Games wanted to capture the essence of Starship Troopers. As Casper says, it’s a meat grinder. This war is hazardous and the worms are deadly. You will die.
Then accept your rewards, choose a fresh soldier and start over. Kill bugs, earn money, gain EXP. Survive long enough and you can retire your soldier and gain citizenship with an added bonus. Or don’t, die and try again. This is a meat grinder.
Of course you store your progress. You gain fresh perks and weapons with which you can equip your next soldier. You can create a stronger structure. The mechanism by which you do this is called the Continuum.
Step into the continuum
Do you remember Cyrano the ferret?
Starship Troopers: Continuum takes place 25 years after Klendath and a breakthrough in parapsychology research occurred – Continuum. This technology creates a psychic interface through which soldiers called PsyCommanders can control other human beings, such as Cyrano in the film.
In Starship Troopers: Continuum, when you put on the VR goggles, you are connected to Continuum as a PsyCommander. You control one soldier at a time. Die and you can immediately take a fresh Soldier. Your goal is to keep them alive… but accidents happen!
As a PsyCommander, you have access to benefits through the Continuum. As you level up, you gain access to more perks and super perks that can be introduced to your soldier to improve their performance. As your soldier levels up, they can gain more benefits at the same time, allowing for build combinations that will customize your game. For example, equip Psychosis Blast to add damage to your dash skill, then top it off with Adrenaline to reduce your dash cooldown. Add to that tactical relocation – move faster, kill more – and you’ve got a speed boost!
Moreover, the more you utilize your strengths, the stronger they become. Even if your soldier dies, a future soldier can take on this skill at an advanced level. This is the meaning of the Continuum. Even as Soldiers die, the Continuum grows stronger, justifying every Soldier sacrificed on the battlefield, redeeming every drop of blood shed!
Build your soldier, create your squad
Starship Troopers: Continuum is an online multiplayer game, great for 1 to 3 players. So build complementary soldiers to dominate the battlefield! Over 20 weapons and over 40 perks allow you to create a different soldier every time. Keep them alive, meet the citizenship criteria and earn huge bonuses that will make you even more powerful. But don’t ignore this mistake! They’re quick and deadly, and there are some tricks you’ve never seen before!
I’m doing my thing! How will you do your thing?
Starship Troopers: Continuum for PS VR2 will be released on October 31.
There are plenty of other ways to kill bugs this October! Starship Troopers: Extermination, a 16-player cooperative FPS game developed by Offworld Industries and published by Knights Peak, is coming to PlayStation 5 on October 11.
