If you can’t wait to check out the Starfield Shattered Space expansion when it releases later this month, you’re in luck, as Bethesda has just released a fresh, in-depth video where the DLC creators talk about what’s in store for you as you set out to discover what the hell is going on with House Va-ruun.
While we’ve already gotten a lot of details and teases about how the studio is approaching the practicalities of the DLC and what it will be themed around, this is the first time Bethesda has gone in-depth about how your character will be involved in the story, as well as exactly what they’ll be doing.

In this fresh, in-depth video, various Starfield creators, including Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb and Design Director Emil Pagliarulo, discuss the initial scenario that introduces the expansion’s main story, as well as other compelling details, some of which we’ve heard before.
So what’s going on in terms of story? Well, as Lead Quest Director Brian Chapin tells us, the expansion builds on the base game’s theme of “humanity’s quest for knowledge” by showing what happens when a group like House Va’ruun goes too far. “Prior to Shattered Space, a secret experiment using gravity drive technology went terribly wrong,” he says, with Pagliarulo continuing, “It resulted in a massive tear in the fabric of space-time that swallowed a large portion of the Va’ruun capital city of Dazra.”
You’ll be parachuting into the aftermath of an event that has apparently become known as the “Vortex Incident,” and has left House Va’ruun in chaos—its people are missing, and its seat of government, the Scaled Citadel, is “trapped in a strange energy field.” “Among the missing is Anasko Va’ruun, leader of the Va’ruun people and speaker of the Greatest Serpent,” Pagliarulo explains. “In his absence, the lesser houses that make up House Va’ruun vie for control over the faction’s future.”
Much more is shown in the video, including fresh alien creatures called “vortex horrors,” which promise to be an incredibly compelling fight as they attack out of the blue.
