Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic revealed as a novel single-player RPG

The 2025 Game Awards surprised Star Wars fans with a reveal Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. It’s an all-new single-player action RPG set in the fan-favorite Old Republic era. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, although given the schedule, we may also see it on other consoles.

The debut trailer, powered by Unreal Engine 5, looked amazing and confirmed a feature we all want: the ability to shape history by choosing between the Light and Dark sides. But the real buzz comes from the team building it.

The game is developed by Arcanaut Studios, led by Casey Hudson. If you know your RPG history, you know that Hudson directed the original Knights of the Old Republic (2003) and the Mass Effect trilogy. Essentially, the architect of the genre’s golden age returns to the universe he helped define.

Post questions about the timeline and what’s next

Naturally, people immediately started asking, “When can we play this?” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier dampened some of that excitement, suggesting that a 2030 release date might actually be “optimistic” because the studio is so novel. This caused many concerns that we would not see this game on the next generation of consoles.

Hudson quickly jumped on social media to clear the air. He rejected the idea of waiting beyond 2030, promising fans that although it was early days, the game would definitely be released before the end of the decade.

This matters because for a very long time, Star Wars has lacked a deep, choice-based RPG experience. Fate of the Old Republic players feel like a spiritual homecoming. The takeaway for now is patience. It’s going to be a long wait, but with Hudson back at the helm, it looks like Lucasfilm Games is prioritizing quality and legacy over a quick cash infusion. Until then, we’ll just have to wait for updates and maybe play the originals again.
