Back in the summer of 2021, when we launched Splitgate on PS4, we didn’t know what to expect. We certainly weren’t ready for the millions of people who jumped online to play our version of a first-person shooter. I think most developers start out with the intention of making their dream game, but time, technology, experience, and a host of other factors often get in the way. With Splitgate, we made a game that we loved and that our amazing community embraced with enthusiasm, but we didn’t make the game of our dreams.
I honestly believe Splitgate 2 is the game I dreamed of when Nicholas Bagamian and I met in our dorm at Stanford University and decided to put portals in a shooter.
We’ve been working on Splitgate 2 for so long that we’re excited to tell you more about it – but not completely yet. We’ll have a lot more to share in August.
For now, I can share the basics. Splitgate 2 is a multiplayer first-person shooter built in Unreal Engine 5. It’s free-to-play, has a faction system, and is coming to PS5 and PS4 in 2025. Oh, and of course it has portals.
We launched the original Splitgate with 20 people, none of whom had ever made a game. Thanks to passionate gamers, Splitgate’s early success led to investments that allowed us to grow our team. I’m proud to work with seasoned industry veterans from Riot, Ubisoft, and many other developers behind some of my favorite games. 1047 Games is no longer a bunch of college grads hoping the servers won’t crash again. We’re a team of seasoned game veterans building a AAA shooter that we hope will surprise, amaze, and excite.
While it was incredibly tough to halt development on Splitgate in 2022, after much thought with the team, I realized that the right path to the best possible version of the game required a true sequel. We had to start over, in a sense. That meant building from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, with completely fresh character models, fresh maps, fresh weapons, and even fresh walls and portals.
While we are a multiplayer-only shooter and don’t have a single-player campaign, we have hired an incredible storyteller to build our universe. If you want to discover the wealthy story of Splitgate 2, you can start now with the free Splitgate 2 comics in our mobile app. You can also expect more cinematics and other surprises in the future that extend beyond the game. One of the reasons we wanted to make Splitgate 2 in Unreal Engine 5 was to make sure we had really great character skins and weapons. That includes the free skins and base weapons, which I made sure looked better than anything in our first game. From the graphics to the audio design to the game modes, our goal was to deliver excellence to players.
We had a few more goals when we started working on Splitgate 2. One of them was, “How do we make this fun to play for a whole year?” Right behind that was a key goal: “Make a game that lasts a decade or more.”
That means we’ve been thinking long and difficult about how to keep Splitgate 2 fresh and alive long after launch. It’s not just about having a ton of content ready for launch. We’re starting from the very foundations of the project. While the first Splitgate was inspired by classic arena shooters, we realized that to make a newfangled game that would last, we had to develop the tools for a deep and satisfying gameplay loop.
This really starts with our faction-based multiplayer, which we’re not ready to share the details of right now. But you can see a lot of that on display in our announcement trailer.
There’s still a lot to show off with Splitgate 2 coming to PS5 and PS4 in 2025. Add the game to your wishlist now to make sure you don’t miss a thing.
