Sony Unveils PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection and I’m Succumbing to Nostalgia

Sony has just unveiled its PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection, which will feature current-generation PlayStation products themed around the original PlayStation, and they look fantastic:

If you’re looking for a system, you can buy the PS1-inspired PS5 Slim, the upcoming PS5 Pro, or the PlayStation Portal. If you already have the console but still want that sweet nostalgia, you can buy the DualSense or DualSense Edge, which Sony will sell separately.

The collection will come in the exact same color as the original PlayStation console and will feature a ton of frigid little goodies like commemorative engravings,

The PS5 Pro will even have a product number, as the number of units produced is very narrow to just 12.3000.

And my favorite is the PS button with all the colors we saw in the original PlayStation logo.

The console will also include a set of stickers, cable ties, and an amazing controller charger modeled after the cable from the original PS1 controller.

Overall, it’s a similar idea to what Sony did 10 years ago when it released the 20th Anniversary Edition of the PlayStation 4.

Unfortunately, the PS4 20th Anniversary Edition came out at the same time that Sony released a special PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Theme for everyone. Sony didn’t announce anything similar this time around.

Is it worth it?

Anyone who is a PlayStation fan probably already owns a PS5, or they don’t because they unfortunately don’t have the means to buy one right now. I have a stiff time believing anyone will buy any of these games as their first PlayStation console, considering how much easier it will be to just buy a regular PS5.

I think the items in the collection will be primarily purchased by one of two types of people. The first are die-hard fans who already own the system and, despite knowing how exorbitant these things are, want to relive a bit of the good times. I fear the other people who will buy it now are unfortunately speculators. If you think the PS5 Pro is exorbitant now, imagine how much it will cost you once all the units are sold.

The original PS1 is the console that really got me interested in gaming. Sometimes I open YouTube to listen to the PS1 startup sound. Needless to say, I’m very aware of how susceptible I am to any nostalgia-based gimmicks Sony might try to pull on me, and many of you might be too. I’d happily buy any of these items, but there are some limitations, so I might just buy one of those really frigid DualSense controllers.

If you live in an area covered by PlayStation Directthen you can start pre-ordering the 30th anniversary items on September 26th through this address. Otherwise, you will have to wait until then to go through your local retailers. The collection will be released on November 21st.
