Sony is hosting a surprise tech showcase this week to update PS5 players on its “innovations in gaming technology,” the company revealed today. It didn’t mention the PS5 Pro at all, but There are rumors of a Mid-Gen updateIt certainly sounds like something designed to allow Sony to showcase the capabilities of its upgraded hardware.
“Join us for a live streamed presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, Chief Console Architect of PS5,” the company wrote on the PlayStation Blog today. “The 9-minute technical presentation will focus on PS5 and innovations in gaming technology.” The event will be streamed on September 10 starting at 11:00 a.m. ET on PlayStation YouTube Channel.
Cerny has led design efforts on Sony’s consoles for years, and was the one who first revealed the PS5’s specs in 2020, as well as giving an in-depth talk on the capabilities of the next-gen hardware and what it will mean for upcoming games, including improved graphics, audio, and significantly faster loading times.
The PS5 Pro is expected to improve on many of these areas, particularly when it comes to resolutions and frame rates, with many hoping the modern console will have an easier time hitting 60 frames per second in technically demanding games, with performance modes sacrificing less visual fidelity for a smoother look and feel. One of the gigantic questions, however, is how much the modern machine will cost. The existing PS5 has yet to receive a price cut after four years of apply, fueling speculation that the PS5 Pro could cost $600 or more, even without a disc drive attached.
It’s possible, however, that this year’s tech showcase won’t be about modern hardware at all. Fans have also been waiting for more information about PS5’s backward compatibility improvements, as well as modern game streaming capabilities beyond Remote Play. We’ll find out soon enough when the presentation airs tomorrow.
Updated 9/9/2024 3:45 PM EST: Some unshared video on the PlayStation YouTube channel, a teaser for the presentation briefly featured the title “PS5 Pro.” It was later removed, but it leaves no doubt that tomorrow’s livestream will be a demonstration of the long-rumored mid-generation console refresh.
