NCSoft and Sony announced Horizon Steel Frontiers, a modern MMORPG set in Guerrilla’s Horizon universe, designed specifically for mobile devices.

South Korean video game company NCSoft, best known for MMO games like Guild Wars and Lineage, has finally confirmed its long-rumored partnership with Sony and Guerrilla to create MMO Horizon and revealed the game in a 10-minute development diary and gameplay video embedded below.

Horizon Steel Frontiers is a multiplayer Horizon game featuring character customization, social features, and raid-style boss battles. In terms of PvE gameplay, it appears to have taken inspiration from Capcom’s Monster Hunter, albeit with Horizon’s signature robotic dinosaurs.

In Deadlands, you play a machine hunter and work with and against other players to defeat enemies and compete for resources. It’s not yet clear where in the overarching Horizon timeline Horizon Steel Frontiers takes place, if at all, nor is it clear whether we’ll see any familiar faces like series heroine Aloy in the game.

There is also no release date, but we know that Horizon Steel Frontiers is intended mainly for mobile devices (Guerrilla Games studio head Jan-Bart van Beek says the same thing in the video). It will also be playable on PC via Purple, NCSoft’s proprietary gaming platform. There is no mention of a release on PlayStation or a wider console launch. The announcement of Horizon Steel Frontiers comes as Guerrilla is reportedly working on its own live multiplayer Horizon game, although it is expected to release on PlayStation 5 and possibly PC. The partisan confirmed its existence this long-rumored multiplayer game in December 2022, disclosing this in the job advertisement would feature an entirely modern cast of characters and a modern art style.

Meanwhile, the studio is said to be working on a full-fledged sequel to 2022’s Horizon: Forbidden West, as In April 2023, “Aloy’s next adventure” was mentioned.. This will eventually join the first two games next Horizon: Call of the Mountain, a spin-off of PlayStation VR2 as the main entries in the series.

Horizon is one of the largest PlayStation franchises in the market, with 32.7 million units sold across all titles as of April 16, 2023. Sony announced the live-action Horizon movie in January during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference. Last month, it was reported that Sony was hoping to start filming in 2026, with a release planned for 2027.
