From Rockband to Beat Saber, the rhythm game genre has maintained its popularity for decades. Most rhythm games require you to hit the right notes at specific times. However, a puzzle game Sonority takes a different approach. The title seamlessly blends the genres of rhythm and puzzle to create something pretty and distinct.

Sonorita’s History

You play as Esther, a adolescent woman who sets out on a quest to learn a magical melody. Her friend Batama (a talking bear) told her stories about a place where animals and people can communicate and magical music can be learned. Since Batama has fallen ill, Esther is certain that the key to saving him lies in this mythical place. After a month of travel, she arrives and so begins your journey.

The world of Sonority is sparsely populated. Apart from Esther, a raccoon he meets along the way, and a few clever stones, there are no characters to interact with. And honestly, that fits the tone of the title perfectly.

Sonority lets you solve puzzles by playing music

Sonority tasks you with changing your surroundings by playing the right notes. You start off with access to one note, but as you progress through the game, you’ll unlock more. Puzzles mostly consist of platforms that need to be raised, lowered, or otherwise moved to allow Esther to pass.

There are pedestals that you can assign notes to. When you stand on the trigger plate for the puzzle, you will notice that the pedestals are connected by a glowing line. This tells you in what order the note on each pedestal will play.

Once you’ve placed notes on all the pedestals, have Esther step on the trigger plate. If you assign the correct note to each pedestal, you’ll be able to proceed. Otherwise, you’ll have to consider the challenge more carefully and try again.

Collect notes to solve puzzles

The distance a platform or other obstacle moves depends on the distance between the notes you assign. For example, you’ll unlock the conventional musical notes A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. To make the platform move one unit of space, you can assign the notes C, then D, or E, then F.

Conversely, if you want to lower the platform, you’ll need to arrange the notes in descending order, such as D then C, or G then D. As you progress, you’ll come across puzzles that require more and more notes, making the game more challenging once you start getting into it.

You will also encounter sleeping stones that can open doors for you. To wake them up, simply play a cheerful tune on your pipes. When the stone is fully awake, the doors it controls open, allowing you to pass through.

Sonority: A Charming Puzzle Adventure

This challenging yet plain puzzle game has only one flaw – namely the responsiveness of the controls. Sometimes, when you try to activate a puzzle by pressing on the trigger plate, nothing happens. However, it usually responds after a few failed attempts. However, apart from this minor annoyance, the controls in the game are silky and responsive.

Sonority is a charming mobile puzzle game that hits all the right notes. With pretty graphics and challenging puzzles to solve, the title evokes a sense of zen. Every character, from the restless raccoon to the boulders with faces, adds a whimsical touch to the game. If you like a good challenge and enjoy rhythm-based games, you should definitely give Sonority a try.
