Sonic Chaos was one of the first games I ever played, so Sonic has a nostalgic power over me. I’m one of the few who consistently holds out hope that any up-to-date 3D Sonic game will keep me on my toes for at least a while before it breaks my heart. That being said, Sonic and his team have quite a bit of experience creating adventure games for mobile devices, so when I heard about Sonic Rumble, I felt a slight pinch of optimism. SEGA strives to create a quick and uncomplicated multiplayer offering with some out-of-the-box elements to make us feel at home.
Looking at this, I had some thoughts: After playing games like Crash Bash and Fall Guys, I was open to competing in the Sonic universe. All this speed and jumping is perfectly suited to racing and platforming challenges, and I want to show off my skills. While Sonic’s cast has definitely grown with the addition of all these up-to-date, custom characters, it loses its identity in some places. But maybe that’s a good thing… I could look at it as a stylized and colorful multiplayer game that happens to have some Sonic elements.
Of course, Sonic has plenty of level design and mechanics to draw from, as seen in the various challenges. It looks like racing can be placed in multiple 2.5D Sonic worlds, and hunting brings back all the types of robotic enemies from earlier installments of the series to some of the more state-of-the-art ones. I also found that it gives you plenty of chances to play well by focusing on what you can get for yourself, or by playing strenuous, going after your opponents to lower their scores and take things away from them. It’s especially satisfying to do the latter, get revenge on the guy who threw you in the air, and then when you get first place you can do it. I’d definitely need to put in the time and effort to unlock some of the better goodies, but so far it’s been a fun and sleek slog.
Sonic Rumble is brought to you by SEGA and is available on Android and iOS.
