Sonic Racing: Crossworlds Review – great ideas with dubious execution

Verdict

Fans of Sonic and Racing games should be excited by this game, but let’s assume that you will face disappointment at different points, and its price is too steep.

My first Sonic game was Sonic Advance 2 for Game Boy Advance and I remember how I sink into this hour. Immediately the franchise was established as one of my favorite all time when I ran the loops, I crashed in many jumps and a spring on board between the platforms. Every sound game I played in, since both he recalls comparisons with a classic game and makes me miss it. Sonic Racing: Crossworlds He wasn’t different.

As soon as I launched the game on my Nintendo Switch and heard known sound effects, I knew that I would play at least fun – after all, it’s a modern sonic game. I grew up at Mario Kart and for some time I was obsessed with the explosion of the Donkey Kong barrel, so racing games are my bread and butter in many ways – I was excited, seeing how the franchise was about it. I was not prepared for pure chaos of what I found, and I’m not just talking about the madness of objects. I’ll start with good.

Basically, it is a fun racing game for people who like the genre. It has all the basics of a good racing game – great adjustment of go -karts, various bags, multiplayer mode, various modes and of course satisfying speed – and also provides absolute fraud on the road. The items are wild and you do not get an obvious guide as they work, so it is partly about learning as you go. Racers CPU is also a bit … good? This may be an episode, but I was provided with a certain level of challenges, which was surprising.

I love art in this game and the design of the paths is great. While every species and concept of the track has already been made by the Mario Kart series, Sonic Racing: Crossworlds found a way to maintain freshness and handsome design. Part of this is a mechanic from which the game is called – portals that allow the world to cross the world one lap before returning to the strenuous lap. More about this later.

Sonic Racing Crossworlds Review: Tails sits in the car, waiting for the countdown to the beginning of the race

The game worked well on my change and there was never a problem with a delay, despite the crazy number of drivers and the effects of items that often appeared on my screen throughout the race, especially in some alternative team modes in the Race Park. I can only assume that it will look magical on improved Switch 2 equipment – and a multi -person game supports a group between various game hosts, which is exhilarating and impressive.

The soundtrack is varied and in my opinion fits well with both the game and IP. Sonic Music tends to a bit great compared to Mario, and it is well done in this game. Hype moments in races seem loud because of music, and that’s what you want from the standard soundtrack of racing games. Similarly, sound effects are pleasant. I regret that there was no more voice, because there is a huge cast of sound characters, from which you can choose and the opportunity to interact them more, but the acting was well done when it appeared.

I also think that the additions of gadgets and rivals are good ideas. Rivals give an effortless goal on which you can focus on races, which increases your desire to win. Gadgets add something a little different and can give you an advantage over friends who sit outside the ordinary RNG objects and the approaching brain. Configuring them and developing what is best for your game style is really pleasant, but there are problems with these functions that indicate more problems of the game in general.

Gadgets, if you don’t know, require gadgets to employ. I quickly discovered that they were unlocked by races. My first thought was: it’s fine, it’s worth discovering my vending machines. Then I saw how many races I had to finish to unlock gadget vending machines. 12 races only in third place? I am afraid to think how much it would take sixth and last place. I became less interested in me immediately.

Sonic Racing Crossworlds Review: one of the songs that appear in the Pumpkin Cup.

At one point, I had to defeat Team Sonic three times to unlock a modern cosmetics for my go -kart, and it was not always executable, especially if I had other goals to achieve in the race (such as proper map learning). Once I lost, the game patronically asked me if I would like to make my team competing with a lower level, but of course I refused. Where is the fun in this? At Grand Prix, the same lines played over and over when my rival and I passed each other. Perhaps I would never like to hear the voice of the wise man again.

The game interface is quite ponderous when I’m out of the race. I felt like I was waiting for a long time to start the race, which with charging times, cutscenes with cutscenes from races and results after the race apparently on the spot. To be candid in this game, for some time I had this problem with other players, but if I play a game with a high octane, great speed, ready to be expressed, I have to be able to introduce options in a few seconds and jump. My brain is already prepared.

Creating items is another problem in this game, especially when it comes to team matches in the racing park. Mario Kart World saw how people lost and confused when they went from the first to 24 in a few seconds, and this also happened to me in this game. Is this the “Get Good” angle? Well, I didn’t always feel like it. Objects are sometimes too criminal for people in leading positions and what are the players who are in return? Probably UH, a cross mechanic.

Sonic Racing Crossworlds Review: Tails celebrates when they win the Grand Prix

A mechanic is a great way to change the game, but ultimately it is not a advantage to a person who chooses the location of the next lap, despite the game who tries to tell me that this is a privilege. Sometimes it is even criminal because you can’t see what is approaching as far as other managers. I would assume it if I saw the upcoming portal and I was the first, desperately desperately warns.

Another thing I don’t like in the portal mechanics is that it leads to the disappointing finale of the racing series. If you don’t know, there are four races in the Grand Prix, and Sonic Racing: Crossworlds gives only three of them in the map selection menu. This is because the last race consists of a lap on each of the previous courses, which is a neat grip, but ultimately flat for me, because it does not make me feel like I have achieved something modern. I didn’t feel like a great finale.

All good things have their problems, and at a crazy price 70 USD Sonic Racing: Crossword defects are a bit too huge for me. However, if you are looking for an alternative to the world of Mario Kart, because you hated an open world system or because you can’t afford to buy a switch 2, this is an option to consider. If you ignore some of the half -baked ideas and focus on the idea that it is a satisfying and quick racing game, there is a winner somewhere.
