One of Resident EvilThe biggest impact on gaming was that it helped the industry develop 3D technology. Along with the likes of Moosethe days of 2D video games were soon to be jettisoned in favor of something more advanced. So imagine my surprise when I saw these two iconic brands come together in retro style.
Above on ModDB, user DooMero Entertainment just released the original version Resident Evil 4 turns back the clock, turning it into a 2D side-scrolling shooter. To sum it all up, this was done in Doom 2 engine. Or at least it was submitted in this category and the developer claims it is built to function GZDooma port that allows the iconic id Software series to run on more current hardware.
DooMero talks about this version RE4 has two campaigns: Leon and HUNKmercenary that has its roots in Resident Evil 2. However, the mod’s description says that Leon’s story has been shortened, “only covering part of the village”, but the HUNK segment makes up for this with a non-canon story.
Is there anything? Moose can’t I do?
I’m showing my ignorance here, but looking at the above material, I’m amazed at how it was accomplished. I’ve really tinkered with a bit of level editing in my time (mostly Tremble AND Shock 2), I’m impressed that someone managed to reach for a classic Moose game – notable for its three-dimensional graphics – and remade Resident Evil 4 in 2D – again, something that is not known for being 2D at all – in it.
It seems I’m not the only one impressed by the mod, given the title of the video above, who is extremely impressed with the idea of this project even existing. This also once again shows incredible power Moose modding.
Even in the last few weeks, we’ve seen all the ways the OG can be tinkered with. Everything from Moose meets Field of StarsDown Moose as The age of empires RTS game, for Doom 2 reinvented as a neon world of synthpop, are things I never thought I would ever associate with the iconic FPS. But here we are.
