If you like anime, you’ve probably watched Solo Levelling. It was one of the best shows of recent years – even though it’s a fantasy with a lot of power, aren’t they all? One of next year’s most anticipated RPGs, Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive is set to bring this power fantasy to life in stellar fashion, and publisher Netmarble will certainly have a lot of hope for its success. Things are definitely looking up, however, and in preparation for the game’s appearance at TwtichCon in San Diego, USA, the developers have released a brand modern gameplay trailer showcasing some of the game’s combat features.
Solo Leveling focuses on Sung Jin-Woo, the weakest hunter in a world where hunters fight otherworldly threats. After meeting in a mysterious dungeon, Sung Jin-Woo discovers that he has become a “player”, experiencing the world like in a video game and able to grind and raise his hunter level – something that should have been impossible. What’s great about this series is that he spends the first few series hiding his newfound abilities, but there’s definitely a feeling that things could take a turn for the worse in the near future as he becomes more and more powerful.
There’s a lot of leveling up and battling fantastic creatures in Solo Leveling, so it’s no surprise that Arise Overdrive focuses on that. Since it’s a series based on the idea of a world that’s experienced like a video game, it’s a perfect fit for the series and I can see Netmarble doing well. The combat looks swift and impressive, and there are definitely some similarities to Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XVI, in which we face huge creatures equipped with melee weapons and visually impressive special moves.
Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive will be released on November 17 on PC via Steam and Xbox Series. If you’d like to check out the game early at Twitchcon in San Diego, it’s taking place this weekend, October 17-19.
