If state-of-the-art RPGs don’t offer enough airships, one game developer is hoping to make up for that shortcoming in a gigantic way. Sky Oceans: Wings for Rent wants to bring back the “golden age of classic jRPGs” to gamers, and we’ll see how it plays out in the skies from October 10, 2024.
Publisher PQube and developer Octeto Studios announced the date along with a novel trailer below. You can spot a few real Sky of Arcadia vibes at first glance. When this game releases, it will be a skies-grabber on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.
You may have already tried these wings. Sky Oceans had a demo during Steam Next Fest in June, offering a brief taste of life as a combat air pirate. The air battles themselves are turn-based, giving you the option to attack or dodge enemy fire when necessary. If your crew’s gear isn’t up to par, you can take some time outside of battle to power up your gear, enhance your arsenal of weapons, and improve your overall agility.
The story sees you traverse the world above the clouds as Glenn Windwalker, a name that certainly fits the adventure. The actions you and your squad take throughout the narrative can shape the future of communities around the world, each providing their own unique characters, dilemmas, and related side quests.
Isn’t it? Sky Oceans lives up to its inspiration, still, if you’ll excuse the term, hanging in the air. Personally, we don’t get enough aerial RPGs featuring a motley crew of pirates, so the more the merrier.
