In retro news, I’m celebrating my 30th birthday Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3The OG Game Boy game that I burned through a lot of batteries on. This oddball platformer delivered a ton of modern things — it established a foothold for the wildly successful Wario Land series and introduced the multiple ending mechanic. To hell with saving the princess; Wario’s ecstatic ending depended on how much junk you looted along the way, and a good payday required intelligent utilize of Wario’s unique transformations (Bull, Dragon, Jet, Small, and Bomb). Ultimately, this odd experiment by Nintendo’s R&D1 department spawned five Wario sequels, but it also kind of messed things up, causing a drought of original Mario handheld games until 2006 New Super Mario Bros..
