With Yakuza Kiwami 3 and Dark Ties on the horizon, Sega will release enhanced versions of Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 on December 8 for PS5, XSX|S and PC. Now they have announced that they are offering them at significant discounts and even as free upgrades for current owners of digital versions of the game.
Unfortunately, this means that owners of disc-based games are left to their own devices, and if the games were purchased through PS Plus or Game Pass, they are also ineligible for the upgrade. There is also the caveat that these are recent releases of each game for a specific platform, so save data does not transfer between game versions, and upgrade pricing is only available for purchases before 8:59 a.m. PST on December 8.
For the three games, there are three completely different upgrades from last generation to next generation and different fees. There will be improvements in resolution and performance on newer consoles – Kiwami 2 will now run at 60 frames per second Japanese FAQ – but Sega took the time to add text language localization for French, Italian, German, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Russian.
Yakuza 0 becomes Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut on PS5, XSX|S and PC and gains the Red Light Raid mode that debuted in the Switch 2 release and the Bubble theme song, which was absent from the original Western release. For this reason, the update price is £11.99/€14.99 and the full game is priced at £44.99/€49.99.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 does not include any bonus tracks, so the update is free for existing digital owners, and the price of the full game will also remain at £15.99/€19.99. From a gameplay standpoint, this will actually be the biggest update, as the original PS4 version maxed out at 30 frames per second compared to 60 frames per second on the older game engine in Yakuza 0 and Kiwami.
Overall, it’s a nice move on Sega’s part to make these upgrades free or inexpensive, though it’s a shame that the largely scrapped Red Light Raid mode from Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut offers such a bonus in this game.
