Savage Planet’s Revenge: Discovering a recent ’90s-inspired planet

Published:

It’s been a minute, but the Savage Planet series continues! We’re back for number two…same people, same franchise, same studio, but under a recent name: Raccoon Logic.

We originally developed this game, formerly Typhoon Studios Journey to a wild planet (originally released in 2020 and currently available as part of the PlayStation Plus games catalogue). Now our recent co-op sci-fi adventure Revenge of the Savage PlanetThe comic survival story in which explorers play themselves to death will be released on PS5 and PS4 in May 2025.

You’ll build and customize your own habitat, explore the alien landscape, scan everything, catalog everything, and hopefully figure out how to survive. With more planets, our sequel is a bigger and brighter universe. Featuring front-to-back co-op and a recent third-person perspective, you’ll run, jump, shoot and gather information across four energetic planets, creating and improving your skills while discovering the secrets hidden within.

Today we discover a fifth, secret planet filled with… not-so-natural creatures, and members of our team share insights into the design philosophy behind its creation.

Watch the video below first!

In this recent world, exploration is still a must! There are creatures to catch, lakes to swim in, mountains to climb, rails to traverse and a secret fun cave to discover. Our fifth world contains an inner lair, which is a stark contrast to our organic and natural open worlds, and our goal is to make our world unpredictable! Here is some of our team to explain more:

A world inspired by retro arcades and 90’s entertainment

Filled with fresh challenges, crazy verticality, and unique modified creatures, this ultimate world answers all the game’s burning questions.

Studio head, Reid Schneider

Our digital mashup is a narrative tool that enhances the mystery of something beyond the natural views of our planets. We talk to the character of Slappie through the dark and dangerous lair he has created. Of course, we still have all the weird and crazy alien creatures we’re known for.

Chief Designer, Steve Masters

The sound design also went in the opposite direction, contrasting our instruments with a digitally produced experience. We started out as a game show style pinball machine, but as we evolved we focused on being inside a giant computer with fun 8-bit sparkles.

Sound Director, Cameron Jarvis

We wanted to provide entertainment value, and robot toys are intriguing and fun! To expand on that nostalgic vibe, we looked back at various sources of retro arcade gaming inspiration. We embodied the hard surface modeling style with retro neon colors that pay homage to ’90s entertainment.

Artistic Director, Erick Bilodeau

Local and online collaboration

Revenge of the Savage Planet has multiple ways to play, including online co-op with cross-platform play and couch co-op (local split-screen). And if you don’t feel like sitting on the same couch with another real human, we also have a single-player mode!

Our systematic design approach creates extraordinary interactions and outcomes that you can explore and experiment with. We designed it to be inclusive of the world, the characters, and your entire experience. Every time you play you will discover something new and experience it differently.
