This true wall of pixels has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 (4K), and its glowing VA panel is illuminated by a mini-LED matrix that provides a nominal brightness of 400 nits and DisplayHDR 600 certification. The refresh rate is 144 Hz, which is quite brisk and definitely enough for any high-powered PC or console. When it comes to variable refresh rate support, FreeSync Premium Pro is available, and while the monitor isn’t on Nvidia’s official G-Sync compatible list, we’ve read reports that it works as expected in this mode.
The quoted response time is 1ms MPRT, although since it’s a VA panel it probably uses some form of overdrive to keep the game blur-free. Samsung probably makes the best VA panels, so we’re confident this monitor can meet those requirements. The panel has a matte finish and is surrounded by very slim bezels, except for the bottom one, which houses a pair of RGB LED lightweight strips and speakers.
It’s worth noting that while Samsung calls this display’s backlighting “quantum mini LED,” it’s a 360-zone affair, not a full-size mini-LED array as you might expect. Even then, we think it’s a much better deal than LED edge lighting and should provide a nice HDR experience, and at this price we wouldn’t argue.
Samsung is positioning the Odyssey Neo G7 as a potential Smart TV as well as a monitor, and it delivers on that promise with built-in software for multiple types of TV streaming and gaming services and an included remote control. Whether you want to buy this for your PC setup or place next to your console in your bedroom, it’s a steal at $499.99.
