Remedy is slowly expanding its Connected Universe with games like Alan Wake 2 and Control, but still wants to make sure each game is enjoyable in its own right.
One of the biggest problems with things like the MCU right now is that you have to watch so much to understand the latest entry. Many of these projects stand on their own and require something else to watch to fully appreciate them, which is clearly something Remedy is trying to avoid. Creative Director Sam Lake recently spoke to IGN about Remedy Connected Universe, where he noted that the developer is “just getting started” and that it’s “too early to talk about the end of the game” at this point. However, he also made it clear that Remedy wants every game to be something you can enjoy.

“I love putting these things together. I love deepening and expanding the storyline,” Lake explained. “I really feel like we have an opportunity to take the elements that we put in there and expand them and incorporate different ideas. It’s really invigorating. From our perspective, each game needs to be enjoyable in its own right and stand on its own two feet, but on the other hand, for our fans, for people who have played other Remedy games, we want to give them a lot of content to discover for the ongoing story of the universe.
Even though the Connected Universe only really started with Control, there’s a sense that this intention is already in place – I played Alan Wake after Control and definitely didn’t feel like I was missing out. Plus it inspired me to play Alan Wake, so bravo, Remedy! Mission accomplished.
Of course, there’s a lot going on with Remedy at the moment as well. There is, for example, Control 2, but also FBC: Firebreak, a first-person shooter for three players, the action of which takes place in the titular Federal Audit Office. Exciting stuff!
