Sales of Sega’s latest Sonic game dwarf those of Zelda and Metroid on the Nintendo Switch

Personally, I’m quite nosy when it comes to finding out about gaming companies, their profits, and what titles do particularly well for them. So when it comes time to publish the numbers, I read and wait. And now it’s official: Sega publishes sales data for two recently recognized brands Sound games: Sonic Superstars and Sonic Frontiers. The numbers are a bit surprising and may indicate the company’s success, with Frontiers exceeding 4.57 million units Nintendo Switch games like Metroid Dread and Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

In the fresh docs, Superstars is slightly underperforming Superstars, selling 2.43 million copies, which is on par with games such as the Switch version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, although the latter has been available for seven years and Superstars won’t be released until 2024. The latest Sega game Integrated report also sheds lightweight on Sonic’s mobile game, Sonic Dash, which has been downloaded a total of 676 million times. Sounds like a lot, right?

Well, it is, considering Pokémon Go is one of the best mobile games of all time and still has billions of downloads. More than half of that is an extremely respectable number, even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the hit Pokémon game. Both Sonic Frontiers and Superstars were deeply hated by some Sonic fans on the internet, so it’s witty to see reactions to decent sales results. But will a fresh gaming king be crowned?

Well, despite some promising numbers, it looks like Sega will fall behind Nintendo for now. Ultimately, Nintendo’s wide range of titles and deep commitment to its IPs wins. Sega relies to some extent on Sonic and to some extent on the Persona series. Nintendo’s dominance with Mario, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Pikmin and many other flagship IPs is a challenge every company must face. If Sega wants to catch up, it will have to produce some hit franchises. Or just make another 15 Sonic movies, I guess.

Mario Kart 8 is still the biggest and best Switch game of all time Sales 68.86 millionwhile Sega’s best-selling game, the original Sonic the Hedgehog from 1991, sold over 40 million copies. Since Sega was out of the hardware game, it couldn’t rely on those sales to keep its foot in the door either. Not that the Dreamcast did a particularly good job of this. It looks like we will continue to worship our one true god, Mario-sama.
