It seems that today, despite the growing competition, match-3 is still the center of attention. Matching icons to clear the screen is basic, fun, and addictive. And with Rift of Ranks, a recent take on the genre is coming to Google Play, but while it offers recent content, it also has a problem.
Rift of the Ranks takes place in the world of Fritris, a fantasy land inhabited by bestial humanoids rather than humans. You play as a character named Rezkar, who in this world teetering on the edge, works with his allies to fend off bandits and other threats that plague innocent people.
The main twist that Rift of the Ranks offers to the typical match-3 formula is the employ of heroes and recent abilities. Whether it’s using magic or siege weapons, you can quickly change the course of each level. And with each progression towards a larger story, it promises a bit more depth than your average puzzle game of its type.
While Rift of the Ranks certainly has some engaging twists on the match-3 format, it would be remiss not to point out the specter of AI looming over it. While the game itself is obviously human-made, you only have to look at the graphics to see that it doesn’t quite live up to expectations and does distract from the more minimalist nature of the game’s other icons.
It’s a shame, because it distracts from what was clearly an attempt to do something recent in an oversaturated genre. Still, if you still want to give Rift of the Ranks a try, you can find it on the Google Play Store right now.
