Review of the GEX trilogy – retro remaster of one of the biggest dreams of fever from the 90s.

Published:

Few games from my childhood were caught in my memory Gex: Introduce gecko. But when older consoles and games became more and more tough to get, I thought Gex ‘Sharp voice lines and eccentric projects at the level remained forever as memories hidden deep in my psyche.

It was until I got a review of the Games Limited Run ‘copy Gex trilogyA remastered version of all three games in the OG series: Gex (1995), Introduce gecko (1998) I Gecko with a deep cover (1999).

The series is about a gecko named Gex, who likes to hit enemies with his tail, which so with love (and often) refers to “tail time”. Although the franchise began as a 2D platformer, continuations, Introduce gecko AND Gecko with a deep coverI granted players more freedom, adding an additional dimension. Each entry in the series hit the shelves in 1995–1999, and the franchise as a whole is known for the fact that it bends strongly into pop culture and socio -political references from the decade.

The most crucial elements of this remaster include modern faith and save, improved control elements, updated visualizations of state-of-the-art consoles, achievement system and wide screen support. It works through a carbon engine, which Limited Run is described as “an internal, reserved engine for introducing retro games on modern platforms through emulation.” And “emulation” is the key here; Limited Games claims that the goal was authenticity, so do not expect any stern add -ons of content or alternative approaches to the game.

With this in mind Gex trilogy Masterly maintains charm, humor from the 90s and a comical game from original games. This remaster seems refined to PC with minimal or any errors, and the added functions only operate the original game. However, some of the original problems of the trilogy make it a niche title that will probably only appeal to Retro players or those who fell deep down nostalgia like me.

For those of you who did not play the trilogy, the gameplay is quite straightforward: at each level you have to jump from the platform to the platform, overcome enemies, hitting their tail and hunt for television pilots, complementing goals. Each level has many goals that you need to complete one by one – and yes, you need to recreate the level several times to collect all remote controls. Add additional collections and hidden goals, and you will run through the same map many times. Fortunately, each level is low, thanks to which the work is uncomplicated to complete each level, and therefore quite addictive. I also decided to jump from one to the other to additionally prevent old-fashioned environments.

New maps open when pilots are collected, and from time to time you will have the task of fighting bosses before you go to the next stage of the levels. It is a simplified but comical game loop, and each entrance to the series expands to the game so much that the basic mechanic brings the tail, lifting the tail and fastening the flies with the tongue remains the same.

What is separate Gex However, from other platforms of your time there was a metaplay about the culture of the 90s. As soon as you loaded to the level, you are treated in displaying Shmozey Austin Powers or a sarcastic stab in a slow fitness guru Richard Simmons. Part of the humor is simply stupid for the whole levels Looney Tunes And another aesthetics of cartoons from the 90s. However, I would be unbearable, not indicating how the humor from the 90s does not always translate into today’s days and age. Other levels in Gex AND Introduce gecko (Like the names of Kung Fuville or Samurai may suggest), in the stereotypes of other cultures, and some may consider it offensive.

Your biggest enemy in Gex Games, however, are not similar to Elmer Hunters or Mooshoo pork, a cruel hybrid of cows-it’s sometimes alone. For example, in the first game of the trilogy, some of the input data seemed delayed or too tardy, and for the platform it can have a stern impact. Although sometimes it was annoying, it never darkened my game to such an extent that full frustration.

However, I met my biggest pain point when I visited my aged stamp again, Introduce gecko. In the second game of the trilogy, you can choose one of three camera options: manual, semi -automatic and automatic. After a few low moments that cause nausea with the last two options, I finally stick to the manual setting. But even at this option chosen I still fought with the camera – and I become more frustrated when I seemed to lose. I can’t say how many times I have prepared for a jump between the platforms, just so that Gex falls flat on his face at the bottom of the abyss, because the camera turned from the action when I decided to jump.

These camera misfortunes were present in the original game and served as a criticism of fans over the years ago. Third entry in the franchise, Gecko with a deep coverHe turned to this, narrowing the camera option and making it working more for players instead of them. Although it was possible to point to the pressure of Limited Run on “authenticity” and “emulation” here as an excuse, it would be nice to have such breakdowns from the originals before they were repacked with several modern functions and sold us for $ 30.

But from all aged games from my childhood that could receive a remaster, is I glad to be the GEX trilogy? Yes, I am – and I would recommend it to anyone who also felt a surge of nostalgia when they saw the initial announcement of the remaster. Unfortunately, I would have to tell those of you whose year of birth begins with two to sit down simply because it loses a gigantic part of his charm if you do not understand the references.

Regardless of age, it can be straight on the way if you love retro games, especially platformers. Buyer, however, beware: Jank from the 90s is still very present Gex trilogy. If you can look beyond the original defects of the game and potentially old-fashioned humor, you will have a good time –tail Time, some would say.

6.5

All right

Slightly above the average or simply rude. Fans of this genre should enjoy them a little, but a few few will remain unfulfilled.

The Gex trilogy masterfully maintains charm, humor from the 90s and a comical game from original games. This remaster seems refined with minimal or any errors, and the added functions only operate the original game. However, some of the original problems of the trilogy make it a niche title that will probably only appeal to Retro players or those who have fallen down nostalgia.
