In 2021, developer Mistwalker self-published an RPG game called Whimheaded by the legendary head and founder of the studio Hironobu Sakaguchi.
According to Sakaguchi, development on Whim started in 2018, after a recent developer relaunch Final Fantasy VIone of the popular RPG series he worked on. While the idea of an RPG hosted by Sakaguchi and developed by Mistalker piqued the interest of many RPG enthusiasts – including me – the RPG was released as an Apple Arcade exclusive game that could only be played on Apple devices.
Now, three and a half years later, those like me who don’t have an Apple device finally have the opportunity to check out the RPG on consoles and PC. Misty Wanderer i The ultimate fantasy developer and publisher Square Enix, which they worked on together Neo dimension of fantasyHD version of the RPG with improved graphics, English and Japanese subtitles, as well as various gameplay adjustments and improvements.
Despite the improvements, I had concerns Neo dimension of fantasy that it can be challenging to transition from an iOS-only game to consoles and PC. But at least there are some noticeable signs and reminders throughout Whim that the RPG was originally created with mobile devices in mind, due to its simplistic but immense blocky user interface and generally circumscribed mobility on some maps, Neo-dimension The version plays well and does a great job of hiding the fact that it was originally a mobile game.
If you are a fan of previous Mistwalker RPG gems such as Blue Dragon, The Lost OdysseyAND The last storyyou know that innovative storytelling and unique gameplay features in this genre are the developer’s strengths. Neo dimension of fantasy begins with the main character, Leo, suffering from amnesia in a strange, machine-inhabited world – appropriately called the Machine Kingdom – which serves as a tutorial and introduction to the game. Accompanied by two peculiar machines to aid him, Leo manages to employ a strange portal device to return to his own world, the Human Realm.
As the story progresses, you will learn more about the strange and fantastic world that Leo lives in, where the people who inhabit it live with a strange Mecha Plague that has begun to plague him. On the way. You’ll meet fresh characters who join Leo on his journey, and you’ll also learn about Leo’s past and exactly what he was doing that led to him having amnesia and being in the Machine Realm.

History Neo dimension of fantasy it is a unique and valuable journey for fans of the classics The ultimate fantasy titles like FF6 will enjoy. There are even segments where various characters’ backstories and pasts are explored in artistic scenes with full voiceovers where a character relives memories of their past, which, if you’ve ever played the game, The Lost Odyssey, will be quite familiar.
Speaking of art, Whim uses stylized dioramas that look very clear and detailed thanks to 4K enhancements Neo-dimension version. Paired with an epic score by legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu, the world Neo dimension of fantasy is an addictive and fantastic game, reminiscent of JRPGs with huge innovative worlds to explore. and for The ultimate fantasy fans, one of the additions to Neo-dimension version is that players can replace the background music during battles with battle music from different ones The ultimate fantasy games including FFXIV, FFXVI, AND Remake/revival of FF7. Battle music in Whim is great, but it’s nice to have an option when you want to change something!

In terms of gameplay, Whim is a turn-based RPG similar to the one found in Final Fantasy 1-10. However, each character has skills and attacks with different trajectories that you can manipulate to hit multiple enemies and really turn the tide of battle. For example, the main character Leo has the ability to shoot in a straight line, so if you can position it correctly, you can hit multiple enemies. Another character, Kinacan, bends his trajectory in a curved line. It’s an addition to the typically elementary combat system of turn-based RPGs that added additional nuance and strategy that really innovates the system. It’s like Super Mario-RPG where you can do a little more to make combat more engaging and enjoyable.
Another attempt to shake up the classic turn-based RPG trope is a system called Dimengeon. At the beginning whim, you unlock this system that allows you to essentially “skip” any random battles you would otherwise randomly encounter as you traverse the world. Instead, the enemies you would fight are placed in your Dimengeon Machine. Once the machine is full, or if you decide to manually activate it first, you will start fighting all the enemies inside. Special tricks may appear in Dimgengon battles that grant various buffs when attacking. Combined with the trajectory system, you can store a group of enemies in your Dimengeon Machine before destroying them en masse. This is a convenient system for skipping battles when we want to get from point A to point B quickly and kill a horde of enemies more easily.

My only problems with Neo dimension of fantasy are pretty needy and mostly stem from an RPG originally created for mobile devices. As I said earlier, the user interface and therefore menus, dialogue and world map are still the basis of the mobile experience. Things are blocky and clearly made, with the ability to touch things easily. Neo-dimension everything obviously works with the controller, but I feel like it looks like an updated UI less blocky and simplistic would go a long way for a world that would otherwise be rather detailed and handsome.
Neo dimension of fantasy takes all the great features of classic JRPGs and finds ways to innovate them while retaining the inherent charm and atmosphere that the genre is known for. And while there have been plenty of great RPGs released in recent years, there’s something special about them Neo dimension of fantasy that combines the ancient with the fresh, creating a fascinating and nostalgic journey in a unique high-fantasy world that is simply a lot of fun to play.
