Remastered collection: Moving modern fans to an ancient favorite

When Lunar made his debut in North America in 1993, it was a distinction on the emerging Western Japanese RPG market. Lunar contained detailed, animated film cutscenes, lots of voice acting, high-quality music and most important-a supporting story full of engaging and unforgettable characters. Although this was not the first JRPG based on CD-ROM that hit the market, it left a powerful impact on everyone who played it.

Continuation, Two PlayStation Remakes, PSP trip and even more widened the audience for Lunar. Over 30 years after the debut of the Lunar and Lunar 2 series, they return to the king of PlayStation with Dredmted moonlight collection. To give insight into what makes the moon games unique – and arouse nice memories among long -time fans – we talked with Matthias Pigms, a producer at Gungho Online Entertainment America.

Silver standard

“Lunar was one of the first JRPGs in CD-ROM format, with animated film cutscenes, voice acting and even opening the leading song,” he explains Pigms. “The series has gained dedicated both in Japan and outside, paving for the whole genre.

The original Lunar was reworked several times and re -released into various platforms (along with Lunar 2, to a lesser extent), so we were curious why the “complete” versions of two PlayStation games were chosen as a base of remaster. “Each version is different and has unique advantages, so we actually fought with this question.

Because it is a “remaster”, not a “remake”, we were wondering if there were any earnest gameplay or changes in history that players familiar with the original games. “General history and gameplay will remain the same as the original edition,” pergams assured us. “We think that the original is still persistent and we wanted to keep the game, as it was by the original art of programmers.”

“In this remaster collection we have prepared a classic mode for fans who prefer to play dots because they have returned to the day – an environment in which you can play a game with almost the same graphics as in the PlayStation 2 era. – Matthias Pergams

What is modern and improved in this remaster? “The most visible changes are graphic updates, which include remastered graphics, user interface, animated cutscenes, bromides (collector’s elements in the game), and perhaps the most important is the” classic mode “, which allows users to play games with graphics with the original PlayStation version.

Voice acting is one of the main topics of discussion among long -term mooning fans. When the entry of the advertisement appeared here on the PlayStation blog, it was revealed that there would be a completely modern cast. How did the band choose modern voices? “Our priority was to make sure that we had the identity of each character through their modern voice actors.

“We also had all vocal songs in the moon 1 and 2 sung by Voice actresses, respectively Luna and Lucia, who modeled after the original Japanese version of the game,” noted Pergams.

“We asked Mr. Iwadare to write a modern song for this song.

The renowned cutscenes also receive retouching. “One of the key features of Lunar are animated cutscenes, so we tried very tough with them during remastering.

All these updates and changes were carried out with a blessing and supervision of primary staff. “During development, we often consulted with Game Arts, the original Development Studio and included their opinions,” explains Pigms. “We also consulted with other development employees, including the original composer, script and designer of the character.

One of such people who visited Lunar for this remaster is the renowned designer of the character Toshiyuki Kubooka. At first, the band wasn’t sure if they would be on board. “He is currently very busy, so when we contacted him for the first time, we didn’t know if he would accept our offer!

Parchs also gave a message from Kubooka-Sensei to fans. “Initially, I was surprised because it had been some time since I was working on the channelist, but I was really cheerful that I was riding the cast again.

New borders

Lunar was beloved in North America and Japan, but as from the above-mentioned edition of PSP-presence in Europe did not exist. We asked Pergams about the release of Lunar 1 and 2 in Europe for the first time, and if they have something that they would like to tell players who think about trying these games for the first time. “First of all, thank you for considering the moon series!

To finish, we wanted to see if Pigms has any advice for modern players. “Don’t be afraid in many games!
