Reforj is a sandbox survival game from former Minecraft console developers

Published:

Former Minecraft console creators 4J Studios have announced Reforj, a recent installment of the angular, open-world survival game that relies on exploration, crafting, and discovering recent things.

Reforj is being built on the studio’s recent in-house Elements Engine, which has been designed from the ground up to feature voxel-based graphics and a sandbox you can customize to your heart’s content, as well as online multiplayer. The studio announced the Elements Engine a few months ago, but has now confirmed that Reforj is what they’re building within it.

The game is currently in pre-alpha, but 4J Studio is interested in building a community around their project and will continue to develop it based on your suggestions.

4J Studios spent the better part of the 2010s bringing Minecraft to consoles, with a hand in the original 360 release, followed by PS3, Xbox One, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, and the game’s initial release on Nintendo Switch. However, their time on the game came to an end as Mojang decided to move away from the console editions they had produced, with the aim of uniting the player base on Minecraft: Bedrock Edition – which isn’t something that fans are universally fond of, it has to be said.

Of course, there’s almost no way Reforj could truly compete with the massive player base and brainpower that Minecraft has built as one of the best-selling video games of all time, but 4J Studios could definitely carve out a tiny niche for itself and still find major success. The key will be finding the balance between knowing the core Minecraft formula, making changes and improvements to it, and introducing recent ideas of their own.
