Quest Master, Apogee’s Zelda-style dungeon designer, is getting a modern update, release window

Published:

Apogee, Julian Creutz and Skydevilpalm they released the latest early access update for their legally separate Zelda-like a dungeon creator, Task Master. In addition to the update, a release window for version 1.0 has been made available. You can expect it to come out of Early Access in Spring 2025.

It’s been a busy year, so far Task Master first launched in Early Access last May, I haven’t really been able to take a closer look. As mentioned above, this is a game that lets you create your own dungeons, in a style that looks suspiciously reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: A Connection to the Pastwhich, as I’m sure you know, was a very good time for dungeons. There is actually a story behind the dungeon decorations and the castle town with its minigames, but the real challenge is designing your own and playing the games provided by the community. You can also build multiplayer dungeons, and if the player doesn’t have a friend, they can control both characters. Tidy!

The modern update introduces a seventh dungeon theme, this time being ice. These are, ugh, those block puzzles where the blocks slide on ice until they hit an obstacle. They are quite popular in Zelda games. I’ve never been mad at them, but they’re far from my favorites. It also adds power-up gloves to allow individual players to move larger blocks. In the editor, you can also create objects that are pre-frozen, meaning the player will not be able to interact with them until they melt them.

This ties into existing dungeon themes and I’ll list them all here:

  • Dewdrop Ruins (Forest)
  • Ember Quarry (Fire)
  • Sand Covered Ruins (Desert)
  • Gust Palace (Wind)
  • Deepcoral Cove (water)
  • Thorns in the Moonlight (Hallowe’en)
  • Coldfang Cavern (Ice)

In addition to this update, the team is planning a secret update for February, followed by a full 1.0 release in the spring. The full version will include a single-player campaign, although the castle town is already available.

I’ve been dabbling in game design lately, but right now a lot of learning how to operate the engine involves using tutorials. I’ve built things in games like Creator of Super Mario AND Trackmaniabut because one of the first projects I want to tackle is a top-down approach You have Senshi Nicol I think it’s kind of a game Task Master this would be a good way to practice without, you know, having to get bogged down in code. So I’ll try this. Just between you, me and the wall, it will be listed during the Steam Winter Sale starting soon. It’s not really a secret, it was in the update announcement.

Task Master is currently available on PC in early access. Update 1.0 is expected to be available in spring 2025.
