PS5 Pro premiere There’s still over a week until launch, but fans have already made an irritating discovery: the modern console won’t work with players’ existing custom overlays. Sony will eventually sell modern ones, but they won’t be available until the future.
This strange wrinkle was discovered by a Reddit user who shared it in a post that went viral on the PlayStation subreddit. “I had some Cobalt Blue plates so I decided to try them on the Pro and I can confirm that the lower plates fit the narrow ones, however the upper plates do not fit because although they are physically the same size, the teeth that engage the system are in slightly different places,” they wrote.
While they didn’t share a photo of the PS5 Pro itself, which isn’t officially scheduled to arrive until November 7, they did show comparisons of the Pro and Slim boards. Although the bottom plate is fitted, you can see where the plastic locking pieces differ on both consoles.
“Sony produced boards for the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro that are exactly the same size and dimensions, but added different interlocking prongs to them to deliberately make them incompatible, even though they are exactly the same.” he tweeted YouTuber Jake Randall. “STAY AWAY from anyone who says the only difference is the size of the racing stripe,” the commenter responded. “It was published three weeks ago and everyone was in denial.”
The PlayStation community has been debating for weeks whether the tiles would fit or not, due to the inaccurate messaging in the PlayStation Blog post revealing the PS5 Pro. The image showing console case compatibility seemed to be definitive proof that Slim covers wouldn’t work but it also seemed too absurd a move for everyone to see.
Sony confirmed the veracity of today’s discovery in a Reddit post and that PS5 Pro-compatible console covers will eventually be sold, but not before launch. “PS5 console cases are not compatible with PS5 Pro” – company representative he said IGN. “However, gamers will be able to swap out different console cases for PS5 Pro when they become available in the future.”
The confirmation will be especially painful for fans who managed to get a PS5 slim console on the occasion of the 30th anniversary but not the extremely rare Pro model. Some were hoping they’d still be able to swap out the PS1-style covers for the Pro. NO!
