Project Sekai Movie Marks Hatsune Miku’s Big Screen Debut

Published:

Sega and Colorful Palette surprised us all by announcing Project Sekai Movie adaptation, which will hit theaters in Japan in 2025. A week ago, the wildly popular rhythm game’s social media teased a huge announcement, but no one was expecting an anime film.

Project Sekai, or Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage, is a mobile rhythm and gacha game that follows the lives of five high school students, their music groups, and their unique relationships with virtual singers known as Vocaloids. It has surpassed 39 million downloads worldwide since its release in Japan in 2020, and is now expanding its reach into animated media with the announcement of the first-ever film adaptation titled “Project Sekai The Movie: A Broken World and Miku Who Can’t Sing.”

Fans of the game know that the Project Sekai characters have different versions of Miku that they call their friends, but the Project Sekai movie introduces an entirely fresh Miku and an original storyline that adds to the game’s already complicated and emotional narrative. As the title suggests, this fresh Miku has trouble reaching people with her song, so she comes to Ichika, and presumably the rest of the unit, to learn how to connect with people through music.

When will the Project Sekai movie premiere?

“Project Sekai The Movie: A Broken World and Miku Who Can’t Sing” will premiere in theaters in Japan on January 17, 2025. There are currently no plans to release the film outside of Japan, however in recent months Crunchyroll has been working with Japanese animation studios to bring their films to the U.S., so we hope the Project Sekai film receives the same treatment.

That’s all we know about the Project Sekai movie so far. We’ll update this page as soon as we learn more. In the meantime, check out the cast and their stories with our Project Sekai event guides and Project Sekai cards.
