The history of the Resident Evil series
Coinciding with the launch of pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem, we thought it would be worth talking about the history of Resident Evil on PlayStation. Mentioning everything would turn this entry into a novel because it is quite long.
Instead, let me highlight a few key moments. It picks up where it started almost thirty years ago, when the original Resident Evil game was released on PlayStation in 1996. At the time, it became one of the most popular PlayStation games ever! It featured Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine searching for their missing teammates, but they eventually stumbled upon an abandoned mansion. Something went wrong. The zombies have arrived. Resident Evil has gained its namesake.
The next installments, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, were also initially released on PlayStation in 1998 and 1999 respectively, and brought the action directly to Raccoon City through the eyes of Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine.
When Resident Evil 4 was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, a special chapter called Separate Ways was added, exclusive to the console. This allowed us to learn the story of Ada Wong on her own mission to investigate Los Illuminados.
Moving forward in time, the first Resident Evil 7 demo was exclusive to PlayStation, and the Kitchen demo was released separately on PlayStation VR. This entry introduces Ethan Winters and the first-person perspective of the series. You can even play the entire game on PS VR while Ethan searches for his wife Mia.
Resident Evil Village continued Ethan’s story as he searched for his daughter Rose. As with some previous demos, the Maiden demo was released as a timed PlayStation exclusive in which you played as one of the servants trying to escape from Dimitrescu Castle.
Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village are now available on PlayStation, along with the remade remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3 and Resident Evil 4. We encourage you to experience these key titles in the Resident Evil series for yourself if you haven’t had the chance yet.
Resident Evil has almost thirty years of history on PlayStation, and it was fun to look back at some of those great moments. We’re excited to bring Resident Evil Requiem to PlayStation 5 on February 27, and we hope you’re looking forward to it. Definitely yes.
