The Pokemon Company and Aardman have announced a very unexpected team-up for a “special project” that you just have to wait a while for.
You know who is one of the best animation studios around? Aardman! People just always get there, even if they don’t, thanks to a distinctive style that’s easily recognizable anywhere, including that one episode of Star Wars Visions they did. So when I heard the news that the beloved animation studio and The Pokemon Company were working on something together, I jumped for joy and shouted “yippee!” (Editor’s note: Oisin did not literally do this). It’s a bit of a mystery at this point what this project is, in fact the language doesn’t even specify whether it will be a movie or a TV show.

In statementVice President of Marketing and Media at The Pokemon Company Taito Okiura said: “This is a dream partnership for Pokémon. Aardman are masters of their craft and we are blown away by their talent and creativity. With what we’ve been working on together, our global Pokémon fans are guaranteed to be in for a treat!”

Aardman managing director Sean Clarke also made a statement, saying it was “a huge honor to work with The Pokémon Company International – we feel truly honored to be trusted to bring their characters and world to life in a completely new way.” Together, Pokémon, the world’s largest entertainment brand, combined with our love of craft, characters and comedic storytelling is incredibly exhilarating.
I won’t get my hopes up too much for this to be anything like a game, even if Aardman has actually dabbled in this area with titles like 11-11: Memories Retold, but it would be pretty chilly if you ask me (hint, hint) . Either way, this will be the latest stop-motion Pokemon project after last year’s Pokemon Concierge, which was created by Japanese animation company Dwarf Studios. As a stop-motion animation enthusiast, I’m on board this particular train – it’s just a shame we won’t find out what it is for another two damn years.
