Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team was first released in 2006 and was the first Mystery Dungeon game in the history of the Pokemon series, and the last Pokemon game released for the Game Boy Advance.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team was released for the Nintendo DS at the same time and was mostly the same, but took advantage of the DS’s dual screens and increased power. Each game also had six exclusive Pokemon, like the other Pokemon games.
An updated version of the two games was released on March 6, 2020 for Nintendo Switch, and we found it to be “like putting a band-aid on a flawed game that was in dire need of major surgery instead.”
In our original Pokemon Mystery Dungeon review, we said, “This style of gameplay certainly has its fans, as ChunSoft has been making games like this for years. However, its implementation in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon hasn’t really evolved much to provide enough variety to sustain the story. It drags on and on without much change, so it’s good that it’s been broken up into segments to allow for quick, mobile-friendly dungeon exploration.”
