PlayStation’s PC efforts are paying off, if the latest developments in the US video game market are to be believed report from analyst group Circan is any indicator. That’s because developer Sucker Punch Production’s Ghost of Tsushima, which originally released on PlayStation 4 in 2020, was the best-selling game of May 2024 in the U.S. And that’s almost certainly thanks to the recent release of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PC on May 16.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut has landed on PC almost four years after the game’s PS4 launch, echoing PlayStation’s PC launch strategy that was detailed last month . The company said that its live-service games like this year’s Helldivers 2 or the upcoming 5v5 shooter Concord will launch on the same day on PC, but its flagship single-player games like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and God of War Ragnarök (coming to PC in September) will launch at later dates.

In May 2024, content spending fell 3% from May 2023 to $3.6 billion, even as mobile content spending grew by 13%. But that 13% escalate in mobile spending was largely offset by a 40% drop in console content spending, according to Circan’s CEO Piscatella MatHe attributes the decline in console spending in May 2024 (compared to May 2023) to the powerful performance of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was released last year.

Elsewhere in the report, Piscatella says that spending on video game hardware is also down 40% from May 2023, to $202 million. “Through May, all current-generation hardware platforms are showing double-digit percentage declines year-over-year in 2024, with Switch showing the largest decline.” Piscatella writes on X (formerly Twitter).

PlayStation 5 led the hardware market in May 2024 in terms of unit and dollar sales, Switch was second in terms of unit sales, and Xbox Series X/S was second in terms of dollar sales. Over each console’s 43 months on the market, the PS5 gained 8% compared to the PS4, and the Xbox Series X/S lost 13% compared to the Xbox One.

Spending on video game accessories in May was down 8% from May 2024 to May last year, and the PlayStation Portal was the best-selling accessory in terms of dollar sales that month – it is also the best-selling accessory for the year.
