Platinum trophy no. 3: Stories from the border

Dopamine index:

The Borderlands series is one that I’ve dipped my toe into a few times, but I just can’t get my head around it.

It’s not even this style of humor that puts me off, which I know is a turn off for some people. I like the cel-shaded art style and the looter shooter concept is forceful.

In my opinion, this is just plain nonsense.

What I played didn’t feel particularly good in my hands, and the UI and menus always left me a bit confused.

I mean, I probably would have had more fun with newer entries that hopefully improved things and improved the gameplay, but with so many games we play these days, I really don’t want to take the risk.

However, one game in the series that I like is a spin-off made by a completely different team – Tales from the Borderlands.

I only played this game because many moons ago it was one of the games available monthly on PS Plus; I’d heard good things, but I hadn’t played a Telltale narrative adventure before, so I wasn’t sure what I was getting into.

I remember being very pleasantly surprised by the writing of the game; having almost no knowledge of Borderlands, I suddenly found myself caring about its world and some of the characters within it.

When I first encountered Telltale’s episodic formula, I really got into the whole journey. The idea that my decisions impact relationships and the story was great, making me feel like I was making a mark on things.

To be truthful, I don’t have very colorful memories of this game, but recalling it brings to mind particular images and characters and toasty, fuzzy feelings.

Even though it was built in a world I didn’t really care about, Tales from the Borderlands managed to transcend the broader series and provide a very different, but much more compelling, route into it.

The reason I haven’t really talked about trophies yet is because they’re incredibly uncomplicated to get. To get platinum in a game, just play it.

So it’s not a particularly satisfying or hard-earned reward, but that wasn’t really the point here – I just had a great time with Tales from the Borderlands and this disc is a nice icing on the cake.

Regards, Tales from the Borderland.

PS I can’t be the first person to point this out, but Robert from Dispatch doesn’t NO looks like Rhys, doesn’t he?

I mean, you know, it’s not an exact match, but I’ve seen characters that are less similar, let’s put it that way.
