Platinum #1: Rocket League

Published:

Hi. My name is Stephen Tailby and I’m fine, thanks.

Welcome to a novel feature on Press squarein which I describe every game in which I achieved platinum. It’s a verb now, OK? “Are you going to platinum Balatro, buddy?*” It’s a verb and it’s fine. We have to come to terms with it now because it will make things easier in the long run.

I’ve platinumed dozens of games on PS5 and PS4 and I don’t know if I’m content with it or not. I think it changes from time to time; there were times where I was really doing everything in my power to get the platinum trophy and others where I didn’t give the damn thing a second thought.

This feature will allow me to reflect on any game where I’ve been dreaming of going platinum, but I’ve yet to determine if it’s worth doing or entertaining in any way.

At least this power be fun, and the potential for fun is what we all believe in when we take a chance on a novel game, right? Am I comparing this feature to a video game? In a certain sense. Both are potentially fun.

Anyway, here’s the first issue of Going Platinum. If you like it, please let me know, and if you don’t, well, I mean, you can let me know too, but just be nice.

*The answer is no.

Platinum trophy no. 1: Rocket League

Date acquired: November 11, 2015

Dopamine index:

For a long time – and by that I mean the seven years between their introduction and my platinum – I never once trumpeted the Trophies issue.

They debuted in 2008 on PS3. At the time I probably thought they were a bit stupid and let’s be straightforward, they are.

I mean, collecting them is chilly, but their sole purpose is to get you to play, and specifically play on PlayStation.

If you look at it this way, all you’re really doing by collecting Trophies is making Hermen Hulst content. He wants user retention to enhance, just like all the other numbers on his fancy charts.

Him and all those substantial executives upstairs, sipping champagne from trophy glasses and laughing as you eagerly try to get the Fall Guys “Infallible” trophy for the 286th time. That’s it, keep playing– they think – the faded Concord stand withered in the corner.

Sorry. What I wanted to say was that I didn’t care one bit about collecting trophies – until I felt the first metallic taste of platinum. Rocket League was my first game and it was great to get my hands on it.

I think a substantial reason I remember this platinum trophy so fondly is because I wasn’t actually one tiring to get it. I enjoyed the game so much that I earned 99% of the core set of trophies through pure, natural fun.

I would play this stupid soccer game alone, with friends, for 10 minutes or three hours, slowly getting better, but never making it more than entertaining. I think there was a moment when I realized how close I was to the platinum and thought it would be chilly to get it in a game I like so much, but that’s it.

This is my favorite type of platinum, and I’ll probably repeat it many times over time – platinums unlocked through the pure love of the game, whatever it is.

Rocket League has changed a lot since I’ve been actively playing, but I have no doubt that I’d have a lot of fun with it if I launched it now.

Regards, Rocket League.
