Metaphor: ReFantazio is just a few weeks away, and it looks like a free demo of this massive fantasy RPG could be hitting PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC today. Person– a riff on medieval politics and friendships filled with magic has been around for months now and I hope this satisfies that desire Person 6 fans have been feeding them for years.

Metaphor: ReFantazio will be released in full on October 11th and will be Atlus’ first major novel RPG of 2021 Shin Megami Tensei V. Unlike that game, this one will take full advantage of the more powerful current-gen consoles. And while it is being developed by experienced members Person AND SMT teams, is also a completely novel franchise, giving you the freedom to experiment in different ways.

One sec Metaphor: ReFantazio borrows from many well-known systems Person—as well as a calendar system, relationship gauges, and character abilities that work very similarly to Persona powers—it also introduces a host of novel combat mechanics, as well as what feels like a more exploration-based campaign. I played it at Summer Game Fest and I had a great time fighting. My city employee Kenneth Shephard I’ve been playing it in more detail lately and I had a positive impression of this place.

One of the other essential distinguishing factors is Metaphor: ReFantazio is that the action takes place in a fantasy setting rather than newfangled urban Japan. As a result, the game seems to be trying to address broader and more convoluted themes about society and politics without explicitly saying that it’s about those things. We’ll find out how well that works next month.
