Percy Jackson is coming to Fortnite. It has just been announced that the popular series, based on the novels by Rick Riordan and currently streaming on Disney+, will receive its own Fortnite island on December 9.
Unveiled on stage at CCXP25 in Brazil, Percy Jackson: Siege of Monsters will allow players to “embark on an authentic Percy Jackson adventure on an island map inspired by Camp Half-Blood, an earthly sanctuary and training facility for the children of mortals and Greek gods. As newly arrived demigods, players must discover the identities of their godly parents, gain new divine powers, and ally with other demigods in a climactic battle against Scylla and Charybdis in the Sea of Monsters.”
Players will be able to meet various characters from popular stories recreated in the likeness of the series’ actors, including Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, as well as “complete a variety of side quests” and other activities “inspired by the first two seasons of the series.”
I recently spoke with the show’s stars and producers about bringing some fan-favorite stories to Fortnite. Walker Scobell, who plays Percy in the series, and his partner Aryan Simhadri (Grover) pleaded with producers to bring their characters to Fortnite “from day one.”
“I’m just excited to be a Fortnite guy,” Scobell says. “That’s what I want them to call me. If that’s the only thing I’m ever remembered for, I don’t mind. Percy Jackson? No, that guy from Fortnite.”
Series executive producer and co-showrunner Dan Shotz, who previewed Fortnite Island at the CCXP conference, says there were a lot of moving elements to introducing Percy Jackson to the game. “We worked directly with Disney to build the entire world in Fortnite,” says Shotz. “You’ll get to see some amazing monsters. You’ll get to fight the Minotaur, have a boss battle with Scylla and Charybdis, and just hang out with the Percy Jackson gang. It’s truly epic.”
Dior Goodjohn, who plays Clarisse in the series, agrees: “It’s really, really ailing. You kind of realize the enormity of what you’re doing when they put you in a video game or when they make you into a doll. It’s crazy that this is real life for all of us now. It’s crazy.”
Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan says adapting his story to a younger, modern audience was important. “I can’t tell you how many years fans have been asking me, ‘When are we going to get an immersive Percy Jackson game?'” says Riordan. “I played World of Warcraft when I was younger, (so) I get it. I totally get it.”
Leah Sava Jeffries, who plays Annabeth, says she used to play Fortnite but plans to get back into it now that she and her friends are in the game. “It makes me want to go back and play the game again,” Jeffries says. “I’ve been waiting for this for so long and now I really feel like this is our moment.”
The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will debut on Disney+ on December 10.
