Path of Exile 2’s first major update of 2025 is here, bringing up-to-date maps, quality of life improvements, rebalancing unique items and monsters, and – let’s see – better “Chaos Pustules” graphics

Path of Exile 2 kicks off 2025 with its first major patch – and it’s amazing. As promised in last weekend’s patch announcement, Grinding Gear Games has returned from its summer break to address some of the most pressing issues and sleek out some of the friction that players have faced in the weeks since PoE 2 launched in Early Access. Update 0.1.1 brings a long list of additions and changes, ranging from re-tuned end maps, to balanced uniques, to general quality of life improvements.

First in comments on correctionsGGG targeting frustrations that players encounter as they progress to final mapping. Players trying to conquer the Arbiter of Ash pinnacle boss will now have a bit more freedom in learning how to fight: on base difficulty you’ll be given 6 respawn attempts, with the number of respawns decreasing at higher difficulties.

Citadels, challenging Atlas endpoints that – in addition to offering sporadic loot – drop key fragments needed to face the Summit boss, will now be easier to locate: they will be marked with a pillar of featherlight in obscured parts of the Atlas map, making it easier for you to reach them.

Four up-to-date tower map types will be added, and map areas will also receive control points and a minimum threshold of three sporadic monsters. About one in four maps will now have bosses, and GGG has adjusted areas of the map to “contain more distinct specializations in terms of the content they contain.” Some maps may spawn twice as many chests; others may have 50% more sporadic monsters, essences or safes.

Monsters that were particularly disruptive to players, such as the grenade-throwing Forsaken Miners and the meteorite-dropping Lost Men Zealots, have been nerfed, which will hopefully mean fewer sudden deaths and map-ending murders from off-screen. Likewise, enemy skill and threat visuals have been adjusted to make it more clear when you’re standing where you shouldn’t be. According to the patch notes, all types of exploding corpses, Flying Plants, and Chaos Blobs should be easier to detect in the visual noise created by quick map clearing.

There are tons of quality of life improvements and general changes: filled slots in gear can now be replaced with other items that can be placed in the slots. Armor effectiveness has been increased by 15% – but with that in mind like coarse state armor is, it may not be enough. “Most monsters smaller than a skeleton” can be pushed out of the way while dodging. The world map should load faster. Burning Ground will no longer appear under levers.

As if that wasn’t enough, the GGG uniques decided they needed some reinforcements. Unique items have been rebalanced so extensively that the corresponding patch notes section is over 2,400 words long. Unfortunately, some players they are not convinced that the changes will be enough to make all but the best uniques worth using. Still, it might be a good idea to look through any spare uniques you have hanging around in your stash – some of them may be more suitable for your build than yesterday.

There are many more improvements and fixes in update 0.1.1, so please check it out comments on corrections in my free time. As for what’s next, GGG said in its patch preview video that deeper reworks are coming regarding character and monster balance, but “those types of changes will have to wait until we’re ready to create a new league with a new economy where people they can have fun. There’s still some time.”
