Path of Exile 2 creator already heavily nerfs skills: “It’s better to do it earlier, before the use of this skill becomes mandatory”

Path of Exile 2 developer Grinding Gear Games has already identified a number of skills it plans to nerf following the action RPG’s explosive early access launch.

Just a day after Path of Exile 2 launched to a huge number of simultaneous players on Steam, GGG he tweeted to say that he “finally reached that point where a skill of unacceptable balance was discovered.” The ability in question is Supercharged Slam, which GGG says deals “far too much damage than intended given the short channel window required to reach maximum stages.”

The developer reduced the damage with a fix shortly after posting the tweet. “While we try to avoid nerfing skills and builds, it’s best to do so early, before a skill becomes mandatory,” GGG explained. “It’s important that a wide range of skills feel real and fun to play, and it just dilutes all the other skills when one clearly outshines the others like this.” The next nerf to Supercharged Slam is intended to adjust the time it takes to accumulate charges, “because it’s way too fast right now.”

Then on December 8 GGG he said he found another ability in an “unacceptable” state of balance: the magnetic volley. Path of Exile 2’s next patch reduces its damage output. “Please note that this is not the only skill we have in our sights at this time, but at this time we are simply trying to address the egregious cases,” GGG said.

“We are currently playing along with all of you and are also collecting a lot of your feedback, which we will address where possible in the coming week when the team returns to the office before the holidays.”

And then, on December 9, GGG he said It’s “a little too easy” to detonate Gas Cloud explosions when combined with persistent Ignite skills like Flame Wall. Another upcoming patch will nerf the explosion damage of both Gas Grenade and Gas Arrow.

“In the future, we want to update it so that the strength of Ignite or Detonator contributes to determining the damage dealt by Gas Cloud explosions, this way we can avoid balancing around the simplest and most effective way to apply Ignite,” GGG explained.

Path of Exile 2 is a sequel to GGG’s action RPG that takes place many years after the original game. Players return to the world of Wraeclast and strive to put an end to the spreading corruption using six character classes, each with two Dominion classes, available to play at the launch of Early Access. There is a co-op mode for up to six players, but you can play solo.

It launched on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S on December 6 and immediately encountered server issues that prevented players from logging in. GGG has warned players that Path of Exile 2 may struggle with an influx of players at launchand so it turned out. However, over the course of Friday and the weekend, the New Zealand developer began to address the issues, and the number of concurrent players on Steam increased.
