That’s surprising Overwatch for mobile there was no port yet. With Call of Duty: Mobile, Apex Legends, and Fortnite all getting their share on iPhone and Android, Blizzard has yet to give Tracer and the gang an iOS and Android overhaul. A recent report published in Jason Schreier’s latest book “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment” shows that a mobile version is in the works.
Schreier’s recent book chronicles Blizzard’s history, including acclaimed RPGs like World of Warcraft and Diablo, while delving into the development of hit FPS games Overwatch and Overwatch 2. He talks about the game’s creation, as he noted GameSpotShreier says that “Overwatch was led by Walter Kong, who oversaw the release of permanent heroes and content for Overwatch 2, as well as new projects such as the mobile version of the series.”
It’s unclear whether the project is still in development, though this isn’t the first time rumors of an Overwatch Mobile port have surfaced. A report published by Blizzard shows that Blizzard was looking for a recent product manager to join its ranks in 2021. Dexerto. The job ad states that the ideal candidate will “work on multiple titles: Diablo, Overwatch, Hearthstone” and also aid “create the best mobile games in the world.”
Activision shook up the mobile gaming space with Call of Duty: Mobile and Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile in 2019 and 2024, respectively. The former is a great alternative to mainstays like Modern Warfare 3, complete with its own crazy story, slick cosmetics, and game modes that arguably put its console rival to shame. However, a look back at Kong’s career suggests that Overwatch Mobile is still possible.
Kong began his career at Blizzard in August 2011, working as a senior director on projects such as the free-to-play mobile game Hearthstone, a Blizzard title for mobile platforms. In a summary of his work on the franchise on LinkedIn, Kong Kong says: “I led the team responsible for strategy planning and business operations for the game. The team’s responsibilities included developing franchise strategy and esports planning.”
He later left Blizzard to work at Epic Games’ Fortnite studio in 2018, before returning to Blizzard as an executive producer in March 2020. It’s worth noting that Kong remains the CEO of the Overwatch franchise as of 2021. Bringing Overwatch to iOS and Android platforms seems like a logical next step for the series, and we’re curious to see if it lives up to its console counterparts.
