OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast Hasn’t Been Released for 14 Years, But a Fan Still Updates It

Published:

You can no longer buy Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast digitally on PC, as Ferrari’s license has expired and the game was pulled from sale in 2010. This is a cruel universe we live in. This excellent, stylish racing game is still playable if you own a copy, and it has just received a fan update that will make it run better on up-to-date machines.

The update, created by developer emoose, is a “DLL wrapper” and placeholder executable that should work with both the Steam and disc versions of the game. Notable improvements include improved reflections, a borderless windowed mode, a UI that supports fresh aspect ratios, frame rate fixes, and improved load times.

They’re here full notes on changes:

Graphics:

  • UI can now scale to different aspect ratios without stretching (requires setting UIScalingMode=1 in INI file)
  • You can dump/replace game scene and UI textures
  • Allows you to disable vehicle LOD, reducing the unsightly visual effects seen when vehicles approach
  • Fixed Z-buffer precision issues that caused intense Z-buffer fights and distant objects appearing
  • Lens flare effect now loads from correct path without having to change game files
  • Stage objects such as traffic cones now only disappear after moving off-screen
  • Fixed some effects, such as engine firing, not appearing when using controllers
  • Anisotropic filtering and transparency supersampling can be forced, which significantly reduces aliasing at track edges
  • Reflection rendering resolution can be increased from the default 128×128

Game:

  • Built-in frame limiter to prevent acceleration, frame rate may be partially unlocked when game runs internally at 60 FPS
  • Restored XInput vibration code from Xbox version so that gear changes, drifts, crashes, etc. can be used as feedback
  • Xbox Series Pulse Triggers are supported and can be modified in the INI file

Bug fixes:

  • Prevents a write corruption bug when remapping controls with multiple input devices connected
  • Fixed C2C leaderboards not updating on Steam and other releases due to flawed anti-piracy checks
  • Pegasus’ animation clatter sound effect will now end properly
  • Text about an online service that is no longer functional can be hidden
  • Automatically disables DPI scaling in the game window to fix scaling issues

Improvements:

  • The game can now run in borderless window mode; the mouse cursor will now be hidden when the game is lively
  • Loading times have been greatly reduced by disabling frame limiter/vsync during loading screens
  • Music can now be loaded from uncompressed WAV or lossless FLAC files if they have the same filename
  • Allows you to skip the welcome screens
  • The music track can be changed during the race using the Q and E buttons or Back/RS+Back on the controller (you must first enable the CDSwitcher in INI)

If I could snap my fingers and bring back a racing game, it would be Coast 2 Coast. It’s art. In my opinion, it’s the best OutRun game and it would be great to play it on Steam Deck without having to buy a physical copy or ask an older boy to aid.
