Crimson Desert first burst onto the scene in 2020 with a bomb trailer at Gamescom 2023, showcasing a particularly attractive open-world medieval action adventure. It has horses, fishing, plate armor, and hiking, but it’s missing one thing: a release date. Now thanks to The Geoff Awards that has changed! Well, sort of – Crimson Desert will be released in delayed 2025.
If you’re unfamiliar with the game, you play as Kliff as he explores the open world of Pywel. In the aforementioned open world, you fight goblins and medieval people. You ride wyverns. Climb rocks, cook, or maybe do a puzzle. Apparently there are “airy abysses” that promise “endless discoveries.” Alice Bee (RPS alone) thought the first showing reminded her of the Assassin’s Creed games from mid-series, when “things got a little silly”. What do I think? I think it looks a bit like he’s trying to do too much, and he’ll quite likely give in to that, resulting in a 6/10 experience for everyone involved. Huh, that actually sounds pretty good – I could exploit some more middlebrow stupidity.
Our James gave the game a whirlwind at this year’s Gamescom, and that’s not all This impressed. Although he thought the clearly combat-oriented demo was a spectacle, he stated that the combat seemed “cluttered” and “clunky” to him. In those brief moments beyond the clanging of the sword, he described this exploration as “delightfully frenetic,” which sounds incredibly appealing. You can read its full preview here.
