Capcom is reviving another of its classic franchises with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, set for release in 2026! The game is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The Onimusha series borrowed a mix of Japanese history with supernatural elements in its setting, built around third-person hack and slash combat for gameplay, with an “Issen” counter-attack mechanic.
Way of the Sword takes us to Kyoto during the Edo period, where the relative peace of the period was disturbed by the plague of the demonic Genma, transforming it into a terrifying and disturbing place. The long samurai with the Oni Gauntlet will have to enter the darkness and fight against hellish enemies.
The series, which debuted on PS2 in 2001, has flourished throughout the generation with a series of sequels, a tactical GBA spin-off, and a fighting game. The most recent major release was 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, so from then on Way of the Sword will have celebrated two decades. However, in 2018 we had a remaster of the original.
Games have come a long, long way since then – just look at how Capcom has mastered remakes and remasters in recent years – so it’ll be fascinating to see what parts of the original concept they keep and what they update and modify.
