In an amazing surprise that no one expected, a vast orchestra and a man with a vast drum took the stage at The Game Awards 2024 to present the fresh game from Hideki Kamiya’s studio. And it’s not a fresh IP – to our delight, it’s an actual, true sequel to Okami. Okami 2.
During the series, we didn’t see much of what Okami 2 would actually be. The reveal consisted of some great music by the aforementioned orchestra and drummer, and a teaser showing what appears to be Amaterasu running through a field towards the horizon. More coming soon, here’s hoping!
Capcom has been quietly preparing the ground for fresh Okami for some time now. Earlier this year, he polled fans to see if they were interested in an Okami sequel, as well as sequels to Dead Rising, Mega Man, Breath of Fire, Dino Crisis, and more. Recently, we also learned from Kamiya himself that he asked Capcom for such an opportunity do both Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3and that he believes Okami’s original team was “weak” and “not a dream team,” suggesting that he may have created something he’s a little more joyful with this time around.
Even if Kamiya believed the original team wasn’t as good as they could be, we still loved the original Okami. We once gave the Wii version a 9/10, calling it “one of the most ambitious and enjoyable Wii titles to date.”
