Following Wordle’s continued success, The New York Times has announced another title to be added to its games catalog – and it’s mostly about math. In Digits, players can add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. You can play the beta version of the game for free online now.
In Digits, players are given a target number that they must match. Players are given six numbers and can add, subtract, multiply or divide them to get as close to the goal as possible. However, not every number has to be used, so this game should put your math skills to the test as you combine the numbers and try to create the right equations to get as close to the target number as possible.
Players will receive a five-star rating if they exactly match the target number, a three-star rating if they are within 10 of the target number, and one star if they manage to get the target number within 25. Currently, players also have access to five various puzzles with an increasing number. I solved today’s puzzle and found it to be a fun numbers-based game that should appeal to inquisitive minds who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other The New York Times titles like Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article introducing Digits and detailing New York Time Games’ development process, The Times reports that the team will apply the free beta to fix bugs and evaluate whether it’s worth moving on to a more busy phase of development “where the game is coded and designed are finalized.” So play Digits while you can, because The New York Times may abandon the project if it doesn’t get the response it wants.
The Digits beta is now available to play for free on The New York Times Games website
